Useful starting places for research

USDA Agricultural Census
The Census of Agriculture is a complete count of U.S. farms and ranches and the people who operate them. Even small plots of land - whether rural or urban - growing fruit, vegetables or some food animals count if $1,000 or more of such products were raised and sold during the Census year. The Census of Agriculture looks at land use and ownership, operator characteristics, production practices, income and expenditures.
USDA Directory of Farmers' Markets
The Farmers Market Directory lists markets that feature two or more farm vendors selling agricultural products directly to customers at a common, recurrent physical location.
Local Harvest Directory of Farmers' Markets
This is different from the USDA's list, and may include some markets and retail spaces that the USDA's list doesn't include.

Tools for creating maps

Some of these tools may work better for creating the visual design that you're planning, and some may not work as well.

If you're already familiar with one of these tools, try it out for this project and see if you can make it work. If it doesn't work well, try a different one. If you're not familiar with any of them, try one and play around with it to see how it works, or see Prof. Geislar for advice on selecting a tool and making it work for you.

Lucidcharts
The free trial account includes shape libraries and 100 basic templates. You can also pay $10 for one month's subscription that gets you more advanced shapes and additional templates.
Prezi
An alternative to Powerpoint. Prezi can zoom in and out, which can be used for adding annotations. Caution: may cause motion sickness in viewers.
Piktochart
Great for infographics! Includes templates for different formats: reports, presentations, posters, etc.
Visio
Great for flowcharts! Part of the Microsoft suite of apps. This software is installed on PCs in the college's computer labs.
Powerpoint
The tool we all love to hate. But it can do a lot of things, including complicated images. Installed on PCs and Macs in the college's computer labs.
Excel
The other tool that we all love to hate. Like Powerpoint, it can do amazing things. Installed on PCs and Macs in the computer labs.
