Get help!

Searching for older material

You will need to use these tools to find information about your document from the time that it was originally written, because the online search tools do not go back far enough in time to find this information.

  • Catholic Periodical and Literature Index (CPLI)
    • This is useful for finding articles from Catholic magazines and newspapers.
    • Location: on the lower level of the library, in the room with the older journals and magazines, on the far back wall.
    • Dates: 1930-2008
    • Look especially for articles from America, Commonweal, and U.S. Catholic
  • Origins
    • This is useful for finding official Church statements about issues related to your document. You'll find statements from individual bishops, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, etc.
    • Location: In the journal storage room on the lower level of the library (behind Trumper).  Origins is located on the shelves behind the elevator shaft.
    • Dates: 1971-present

Caution: DO NOT USE the free online version of The Catholic Encyclopedia (at newadvent.org, catholic.org, catholic.com, or catholicity.com).  It is outdated -- published in 1907-1912!  Instead, use the online New Catholic Encyclopedia  or the print version in the library reference section. Ask a librarian if you need help finding it!
