Examine database search results like a scholar

  1. Begin with the article title.
  2. If the title looks promising, move to the abstract. Is this information interesting? Does it answer or relate directly to your research?
  3. If so, do a critical read of the article, focusing on the most relevant and telling sections.
    1. Skim the introduction.
    2. Look at section headings.
    3. Read figure and table captions.
    4. Skim the results, discussion, and conclusion sections.
  4. If the critical read reveals that the article is relevant, save the article.
  5. Return to the search results and repeat these steps with the next result.
