NURS 385 Nursing Research

  • Peer reviewed
  • Nursing journals
  • Primary source original research article (the authors of the articles are reporting on research that they themselves conducted)
  • Melnyk Fineout-Overholt level of evidence 2, 3, 4, or 6
  • Minimum of two articles
  • Tip: research articles will have sections such as Literature Review, Methods, Findings or Results, Discussion, Conclusions, Limitations, and References.

Search strategies

  1. Begin in CINAHL-Ultimate
  2. Scroll to "Search options" section and select "Peer Reviewed" box and Published Date: 2013-2023.
  3. Try a search with the name of the nursing theory, inside double quotes, combined with the word research, to get an idea of research articles published studying your theory.
    "theory of comfort" AND research; "transcultural nursing theory" AND research
  4. Try a search with the name of the nursing theory, inside double quotes, combined with your topic
    pain management AND "theory of comfort."
  5. Try searching for your topic of interest, add the word research and a term from your theory
    facilitated tucking AND research AND comfort
  6. Use the "Subject: Major Heading" limiter in the menu that appears on the left to the articles retrieved from your search, to narrow your search.
  7. Hover over the magnifying glass to the right of the article title in your list of results. Look for methods section to discern what type of research the authors have conducted.
  8. Once you have found one relevant article, click on the title and scroll to the "Major Subjects" and "Minor Subjects" sections. These are links that will lead you to other relevant articles. Notice that the identifier MM is used to identify Major Subject Headings. Combine subject heading searches with keyword searches to narrow your search: MM "Transcultural Nursing" AND pediatrics AND research.
